Integra wins two awards in the 'Apps for Science' competition conducted by Elsevier

Integra's app, iHelp, is the Winner of the Popular Choice Award and also ranked 3rd in the "Apps for Science Challenge" contest conducted by Elsevier competing against 26 other global participants.

Elsevier offered $35,000 to software developers to create apps and help more than 15 million researchers, medical professionals, librarians and students accelerate science. It encouraged librarians and information professionals to conceptualize solutions to the challenges that they and their constituents face in addressing the search and discovery of information.

Integra's technology team took up this challenge and came up with a unique 'app' which is named as 'iHelp' that enables researchers do keyword search in their native languages. It retrieves articles using a multilingual search with option provided to the user to do phonetic typing of search text. User can either do native language search or translate the keyword in English and execute a search. The app uses Sciverse API and Google API for data retrieval and visualization.

Features

  • User can choose any language for keyword search
  • Multilingual online keyboard can be invoked
  • Two types of searches
    • Native search
Native search will look for the articles containing the search text and returns articles in the particular language. For instance, when "hersenen" (brain in Dutch) is the keyword, all the articles in Dutch language containing the word "hersenen" will be listed.
    • Translated search
Translated search will look for the articles after translating the search query to English. For instance, when "hersenen" (brain in Dutch) is searched, all the articles containing the word "brain" will be listed.

Following the submission period (May 13 to September 2, 2011), an international panel of judges selected 10 app concepts as finalists. The community was invited to comment on the finalists and vote for their favorite idea
